WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

Mean monthly air temperature was 0.3ø above the long-term average (+0.2øC) in July 2006 on the Frants Josef Land archipelago, based on the data of weather station on Kheys Island, while minimal and maximal temperatures were -2.4øC and +10.8øC, respectively. Mean daily temperature dropped to -1.0øC on the coldest day of the month, 27 July. The weather was dull with drizzle, air temperatures ranging from 0øC to +1.7øC (mean daily temperature +1øC) in the period of our studies on the archipelago on 17-18 July.
Thus, weather conditions were close to long-term average based on the weather station data. The data of Arctic and Antarctic
Research Institute indicated considerably reduced ice-cover at the north of the Barents Sea and close to long-term average ice conditions (slightly reduced) in the eastern part of the Kara Sea. We did not observe drifting ice between Victoria Island and Frants Josef Land Archipelago, while on the latter ice was present in the straits and near coastline, primarily in the north-east. Condensed ice pravailed in the Kara Sea in the area of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, and fast ice did not break in the area of the Sedov archipelago.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Ivory Gulls bred successfully in surveyed colonies on Zemlya Alexandry and Eva-Liv islands of the Frants Josef Land archipelago, where also nesting of the Common Eider (clutches found) and Arctic Skua (downy chick found) was recorded.

Rodent dynamics:

Rodents are absent on all surveyed islands.
